Cycle of tribunes on articulating problems in the area of culture related copyright started in the Belgrade Cultural Centre
Due to the necessity of articulating domestic legal solutions in the sphere of culture related copyright, the Belgrade Cultural Centre and non-government organization Balkankult in the course of next several months will realize a series of tribunes dedicated to the regulations for maintenance and improvement of the local cultural ambient.
- The aim of the whole action is to try to explain both to authors and publishers, but
also to the whole corpus of people, institutions and enterprises that unlawfully use various works of authors, that it is the last moment for the integration into legal solutions governing in the European Union, which include a high degree of the protection of copyright, said PhD Slobodan Markovic, lecturer on copyright at the Faculty of Law. He added that piracy is only one segment of an unlawful behaviour, while media exploitation of works of authors is completely uncovered by legal provisions.
- In all countries of the European Union most electronic medias must compose a
list of broadcasted music clips or concert recordings so that a copyright protection agency could have an insight into the representation of particular artists in order to, as much efficient as it can, protect their copyright through royalties which must be paid to the agency by televisions, said Mr Markovic.
The guest of this tribune was Ms Tijana Tomic, Head of Copyright Department of the Croatian Institute for Intellectual Property. She emphasised the necessity of animating all interested parties in a wider social debate in order for legal solutions to meet the minimum interests of authors, publishers, but also marketing agencies and public.
- Prior to the enactment of this law that came into force on October 28, we were obliged to consolidate various demands and expectations, first of all of the artists themselves and their publishers who were the least ready to compromise. Therefore, it is necessary to define strictly all legal provisions, however make them acceptable for their commercial exploitation, said Ms Tijana Tomic. Promotion of the book “Intellectual Property, Protection of Traditional Knowledge and Skills” in the edition by “Balkankult” has been scheduled for December 3, while the topic of a tribune on December 17 is Intellectual Property – Visual Arts – Copyright in the Field of Design. The whole action will be closed by the session on Intellectual property in theatre and film industry.
