CAIRO RESIDENCY SYMPOSIUM, 25 - 27 March 2009

Townhouse Gallery (Cairo) and the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture (Amsterdam) organized a three day Residency Symposium in Cairo on the artists mobility residence scheme between Europe and Mediterranean region .

Inspired by the increased interest in artist mobility between Europe and the Mediterranean region, the Middle-East and Africa and upcoming initiatives in the region, the Townhouse Gallery (Cairo) and the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture (Amsterdam) organized a three day Residency Symposium in Cairo.

The programme covered all the relevant subjects in both plenary and group sessions. Particularly inspiring was an exchange of practical experience between participants running artists-in-residence centers. In this context there was a discussion on the following issues: foundation regulations and rules; conditions for residencies; motives of organizers and guests; programmes; evaluation; and many other current issues. Some of the added value activities of the Cairo Symposium were:

- Tangibility and practicality of presentations, comments, suggestions and conclusions of the participants

- Presentation of concrete experiences from diverse cultural, economic and political realities (from Cameroon and Ethiopia to the Netherlands and Denmark)

- Unique possibilities for encounter and communication between artists-in-residence representatives, curators, artists and cultural professionals from Africa, Middle East and Europe

- Possibilities of informal conversations and exchanges between far, but in same time in many aspects close, cultural traditions and practices.

The Cairo Symposium will certainly be remembered as a successful encounter that produced many positive results that can be followed up in the future. A representative of the Balkankult foundation took active part in the Symposium, which proved to be an invaluable experience. Particularly useful was the potential for cooperation with colleagues from Africa. It is necessary to give credit to the organizers for their efforts to realize this Symposium that was perfectly conceived, realized in a constructive and friendly atmosphere.

Dimitrije Vujadinović, Balkankult foundation's president and the only representative from the Balkan region participating in the Cairo Symposium.
